LOOP HOUSE Located in the heart of Phnom Penh City, Toul Kork Residence sits on a quiet street nested in between traditional villa and new development area that used to be Boeung Kak Lake. The land is divided into two, a residential building and an office building that houses a new and up-coming architecture and design office. The architecture is inspired by the environmental factors of the site, the views, vernacular Khmer architecture and the New Khmer Architecture style in the 1960s period. The goal of the house is not just a home; it’s a journey and a place for inspiring the future of Cambodian and architecture in Cambodia. The raised ground floor reflects the traditional Khmer house; the internal courtyard offers communal space, views and a break away from the solid building of the typical villas surrounding it. The loop connects all floors together by creating a visual dynamic to the space. The exterior façade showcases deep shadow lines and a rhythm of vegetable columns that answers to the style of the new Khmer architecture and at the same time speaks contemporary green architecture. Lastly, the barrel vault shape roof acts as a beacon that mimics the iconic Islamic mosque that situated in Boeung Kak lake area and boosts a very special sleeping space in the inside.
